The 2026 midterm elections may have changed the balance of political power, but the machinery of the American police state keeps right on running. The surveillance state, militarized policing, government detention machinery, endless wars and accumulated executive powers remain. What good is a political change if the weapons of oppression merely change hands?

The Pentagon has a plan for Armageddon: keep the war machine running even if a catastrophic war devastates America's civilian infrastructure. But what about the rest of us? In a scenario straight out of Dr. Strangelove, the government is preparing to survive the end of the world, raising disturbing questions about who gets left behind—and what happens to the Constitution when preserving government power takes precedence over protecting the American people.

Constitutional rights have become bargaining chips in a political game that ordinary Americans always seem to lose. Thinking for yourself can make you a political outcast these days. Question Trump, question his opponents, or demand that government officials obey the Constitution, and suddenly you're treated as the enemy. With another national election approaching, what happens when Americans become more loyal to political parties than to the Constitution they're supposed to defend?

From ICE raids to allegations of political intimidation and financial conflicts, the Trump administration faces mounting questions about government power. But the danger extends beyond Trump: what happens when Americans stop demanding accountability?

A smaller federal workforce does not necessarily mean smaller government. It may mean a larger government machine—one capable of watching, processing, investigating and targeting more people with fewer human beings standing in the way. As the Trump Administration cuts the federal workforce while racing to automate government with artificial intelligence, we could be witnessing something far more dangerous than bureaucratic downsizing: the rise of bureaucracy without bureaucrats, government without human restraint, and authoritarian power without accountability.

America, you got fooled. Again. Think the breakdown of due process only affects immigrants? Think again. The mass surveillance, masked raids, and erased detainee registries aren't just an immigration crackdown—they are the dress rehearsal for a system that will inevitably be turned inward on every American and the infrastructure of an American prison state being assembled in plain sight.

Tariffs. A ballroom. A triumphal arch. The press. Increasingly, almost anything can be recast as a matter of “national security.” A government that can declare anything a national-security concern can eventually declare anyone a national-security threat.

What's the point in celebrating the Constitution one day a year if we permit the government to violate it the other 364? Across the political spectrum, Americans continue to tolerate abuses of power so long as those abuses are carried out by the “right” people, against the “wrong” people, or in the name of some emergency deemed too important to question. That is how constitutional government dies.

Twenty-five years after 9/11, has the nightmare ever really ended? What began as a war on terror has become a permanent state of war, surveillance and emergency, while presidents of both parties have inherited ever greater powers to bypass constitutional restraints.

On August 31, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Trump’s $400 million White House ballroom project to continue—not because the Court determined that Trump had acted legally, but because the preservationists challenging it likely lacked standing to sue. That raises a much larger question: At what point will “We the People” be told that we, too, lack standing to object to the destruction of our republic? That is tyranny by technicality: government acts first, the courts catch up later, and by then the damage may already be done.
